Drugs and Celebrities

It is hard for me to imagine people being able to do things like stand-up comedy, acting in movies and on television programs, who are under the influence of certain self defeating substances like heroin, speed, crack etc… One of my all time favorite comedians, Richard Pryor, was a big time drug user. He loved to smoke cocaine or what is commonly known as crack. I am befuddled by the way that he was able to execute the way that he did while being under the influence. He was high during the making of the film “Stir Crazy” and by all means, the first time that I saw that movie I didn’t have the slightest clue that he was under the influence of anything. Not to mention, most of his stand-ups were done under the influence.

After doing some research on his life, I had realized that he was an extreme user, or addict, if you will. I never heard of him enlisting into a drug treatment center until after I had heard of the life-threatening episode of him and his bed catching on fire from his crack pipe. Richard Pryor is one, among many other celebrities, who have been extremely affected by drug use. The tragic story of the musician/singer, Kurt Cobain, was one that I will never forget. If you were a fan, then I don’t think you could ever forget his story either.

Drugs played a heavy role in his life, as well as, in the life of his wife, singer Courtney Love. It would be hard to believe that drugs didn’t play a vital part in his death in April of 1994. It appears that drugs have been the cause of death for many actors and singers like Heath Ledger, James Dean, River Phoenix, Jonathan Brandis, Janis Joplin, Rick James, Marilyn Monroe, and the list goes on. Very seldom do you hear about their time spent in Drug Rehabilitation. Yes you may hear about a certain celebrity who is in need of Addiction Treatment but you don’t actually know what is going on during their rehabilitation process.

One actor in particular who was under the spot light throughout most of his days in rehab was actor Charlie Sheen. I must say that due to the effective and life changing drug rehab center that he was checked into, his recovery was an absolute success. There have been many celebrities who have checked in to a Drug Rehab facility and have now made a 180 degree turn around. Celebrities like Robert Downey Jr., Matthew Perry, Johnny Depp, Kirsty Alley and Robin Williams, are ones who have seemed to put that lifestyle behind them. Addiction is such a serious and reoccurring issue in life, but thankfully there is plenty of top-notch, good-quality Rehab Centers out there that can make a difference. Rehab has changed many people’s lives as well as the lives of celebrities.

However, this is, I think, an ongoing issue that we are going to have to deal with forever. People are always going to have some kind of addiction problem that they are sooner or later going to have to deal with. Unfortunately for many, the problem was never overcome. Before it is too late, seek out the right rehabilitation center for you or your loved one who is dealing with an addiction problem. Sadly, if the issue is never resolved, then the probability of cancer, heart failure, or any other terminal and fatal illness can and will occur.

It is very unfortunate that Richard Pryor died because of a disease that infected his body due to all the drugs that he was using. I wish that he could have just gone to an amazing rehab center that could have rejuvenated him entirely. But, I guess the lesson to be learned here is, that life is what we make out of it and we do have the power to make the decision of if we want and need help.
